so i had planned on actually buying this product, playing around with it a bit and then writing up a full review, and i’m sure that i will in the future, but for now, no. i’m going to wait and see what apple really does with this program. from the many sites that i have been reading, since it’s release, it sounds like the new final cut pro x is basically imovie on steroids. sure it has some amazing features, color matching, clip connections, a magnetic timeling… etc. but one major thing that it doesn’t do, which is major to me, is allow you to open older versions of any fcp product, yet, it does allow you to import older imovie projects. HUGE FAILURE!…. so is this final cut pro or just another version of imovie? here’s some articles you can read and judge for yourself. i will inevitably download and use the program, so look for a better review later, but for now, i’m not impressed.

hello world, as all you video nerds know apple announced that they are releasing a new version of final cut pro, if you don’t know you can catch up by reading about it here. well to follow suit, adobe announced that they are also going to be updating parts of the CS (creative suite) to a 5.5 version. most the software being upgraded to the new 5.5 line is all in the video production line, to compete with the fcp update no doubt, and wildly has a lot of the same features that the new fcp is coming out with, up side, it’s coming out at the end of may (a couple days before fcp), downside unless you can get the upgrade price, it’s going to be a little more expensive than apple’s $299 price.

check out the video!

there a lot of changes coming out with the cs 5.5 upgrade so please check them out here, but some of my favorites are:

1. auto syncing audio and video, thanks to the uprise of using dslr’s to shoot video, this has always been a hassle, sorry pluraleyes, this is bad for you.

2. audition is now included in the production premium package, which is going to be amazing for audio editing, cleaning, and mastering.

3. the warp stabilizer in AE is going to be amazing now, with how it can smooth the camera movement, but than also uses the surrounding pixels at the edges to complete the image so you no longer need to crop a 1080 comp to a 720 comp because of the stabilization

4. working between adobe story and premiere is amazing to giving your video metadata and being able to find specific shots just by clicking and searching in the script

5. all the lens blurs and 3D light fall off added to AE

all in all, and i’m not just saying this because I have taken a liking to using adobe products, i think this is going to be an great upgrade, and they are doing it all without changing the entire UI and making people learn all over again apple. granted it is probably still going to have it’s problems and i do plan on testing it out as well as apple’s fcp x, but most of what i love is the workflow between all adobe products that apple has yet to master, so we will see.

till later

UPDATE: here’s the full announcement speech

no, i am not at NAB unfortunately, but i was pretty sure that apple was going to unveil the latest version of it’s pro editing system. now for the record, i currently edit using adobe’s cs5 production suite, but for many many years i was a final cut only type guy. the new final cut is finally going to have full 64 bit support, allow you to use up to 8 cores and also finally going to have background rendering to look forward to, which is pretty exciting.. finally. it also is going to have a mess of features like, a new way of handling all of our massive quantities of media, a new process that allows you to start editing as you are importing, content auto analysis (people detection, shot detection, auto color balance, audio cleanup) and a slew of additional features. you can see a list of them here on macrumor.com coverage of the event.

now it may be too early to tell, but many things about this release stick out to me and make me question whether this is going to be a “pro” application anymore, or if apple, being apple, is moving it more towards the ios and consumerville…. it’s going to be released in june on the app store for $299, there’s no mention of any of the other studio programs coming with it. from the images of the announcement the screenshots make the application look like a hybrid between final cut express and imovie and with some of those new features it sounds like it is going to be on auto pilot, kind of doing what it thinks would be best for your footage… hopefully there is a switch to turn the code driven pilot off, i like editing my own footage thanks.

i know i know, it’s too early to tell anything, but these are just my first impressions of the software coming out and the announcement. as with most things, i am still excited to see it released and am definitely going to try it out, but until then, i’m a little hesitant of it….

also check out loopinsights post for additional high-res screenshots of the software

the world is abuzz with the rumors of new cameras coming out constantly, well here is one that i am pretty excited about, the sony nex fs100. sony is going to unveil it at this years nab conference. it’s going to be an amazing step in the whole hdslr vs. camcorder war that is going on. sony was very smart in recruiting the people at f-stop academy to get their input about why everyone is so excited about the hdslr’s and what are the pro’s and con’s of them. working together with them, they were able to create, what i think, is going to be an amazing camcorder to finally match the quality of the hdslr’s that i have been using, but also add the functions of a real camcorder that we all have been missing from shooting video with a dslr camera. read all about the processing and the amazing features of the camcorder on f-stop academies site here and here is also the video featured on that page announcing the camcorder.

honorarium is a short film shot by steve mims last fall. the reason why i’m going to talk about it is because he shot the half the film on the 7D and the other on the EX1. i recently came across this video of his on vimeo where he shows some of his shots used in the short and also identifies which shots are which with supers. it’s a great quick vid comparing the two cameras and to me really shows that if you know what you are doing you can use any camera to make a great film. also, shows that the canon 7D can keep up with the more expensive cameras.

wow world.. .not sure how i missed this one, i’ve been obsessing over my canon 7D so much that i haven’t really considered looking to see the next big camera to be coming out. well here it is, canon is realeasing two new hd camcorders to their line, and what do you know, they have finally done away with tape. an article about the new cams can be read here and the camera models are going to be the XF305 and XF 300. basically think xh a1 and g1 but with much better sensors, CF hot swappable recording media, choices of bit rate, frame rate, and resolution, and yes for the crazies out there like me, it will shoot in 60 fps so we can get nutz with some slow mo action!

it’s about time that canon comes out with their own line of tapeless pro camcorders, i mean i love my xh a1, but ever since getting my 7D i have realized how much i hate tape. these cams aren’t going to come without a major cost, the cheapest being just below 7 grand, but the 50 mbps 4:2:2 recording @ full 1080p res definitely make it a very enticing product to think about. of course for the vids i am currently working on my xh a1 will do just fine and i would have to sell my car and half my apt to get the newest and best… plus, think of how many 7D’s i could get for that price! hah!

well netz, if you haven’t heard, it’s rumored that hulu.com is going to go the evil route of starting to charge a monthly fee. according to the article here hulu is poised to start charging 9.95 per month for viewing of television episodes that are older then 4 or 5 newest episodes for the given show. seriously… wtf, they don’t make enough on the advertising so now they have to charge us if we want to catch up on an old series that we may have missed? do yourself a favor world, get a netflix account for the same cost and none of the advert hassles. also, many of your peripherals can actually stream netflix to your tv, whereas many of them are unable to stream hulu.com. or do like i do and just surf the web for free eps. one of my fav sites i go to in lieu of hulu is blinkx.com. they usually have up to date episodes of things or will have within a few days and some are even with out ads!

hope you had a great weekend world!

jesus, just when i thought the war over video codecs was slowly coming to an end, the new html5 debate is going to throw something new into the confusion. the article i read everything about was posted on reelso.com and can be read here, http://www.reelseo.com/html5-vp8-google/

basically, the new war is wether or not html5 video should choose to support a video codec that is open source or not. there are three main codecs that are in the running, 2 are open source, and one is h264, which currently is free, but some fear if they get a deal locked in with html5 that they (MPEG LA) would begin to charge for licensing fees. I could see mpeg la being some evil bastards and doing this, i mean, everyone wants to make a buck. i personally have been a big supporter of the h264 codec and have been using it for a while now and trying to get my clients to realize what a good codec it is also, so i’m hoping that mpeg la doesn’t become the evil villain that people think they would if they were able to get the deal for the video codec in html5.

the other two codecs in the running are open source, one is ogg, mainly supported by firefox, and the other is a potential codec that google is going to release called vp8, which google didn’t create, but acquired when they purchased on2. everyone can see the advantage to using either of these codecs, mainly they are open source, so if the html5 war goes to one of them we would be guaranteed, hopefully, that they would stay open source and free.

one of the main problems i see with bringing in the new codecs is getting everyone used to using the new codecs. personally, i don’t mind learning a new codec, everyone has it’s own little quirks you have to learn, but i’m worried about the ease of use of the codecs. the vp8 codec isn’t out yet so i can’t talk about it, but the ogg codec is out and you can get a plugin for firefox here that will allow you to use the web browser to create the file. the user interface to create the ogg is pretty easy and well laid out, but i did have one problem with it. for some reason no matter what bit rate i would input it would do something completely different and this never was fixed after multiple tries. also, the bit rate the compressor would spit out was never consistant. this will make it extremely difficult to give a client a video at a specific bit rate if they request it and also if you have limited space from your web host and need to keep your videos small.

i’m sure by the time html5 and video within it really catch on all these problems will be solved, so really probably nothing to worry about, just more video codec problems to deal with, which is always fun.

big news coming about with the season finale of House MD being filmed entirely on the canon 5Dmii video dslr. this is going to be amazing.. as many of you know i have a canon 7d and think the video from it is amazing and have used the 5d and know the video from it is amazing also. and now to see an entire television episode being filmed on it is just going to show how these cameras are changing the face of how we make videos. i first read about this on philip blooms blog which can be read here: http://philipbloom.co.uk/2010/04/10/house-season-finale-shot-entirely-with-canon-5dmkii/

basically the director held a q & a on twitter which can basically be summed up as saying, it was easy to film with, they didn’t have to change much in order to film with it and the video dslr is the future. i agree, the filming i have done with the 7d is amazing and having it come from such a small camera you can pretty much go anywhere with these things.

happy weekend netz.. prost
