Cyclist hits Camerman

and the cameraman just happened to be me…

i do a lot of camera work with a cycling company/team called Rapha and the work i have done with them is some of the most exciting and fun jobs that i have done. this time working with them was in vancouver, canada where they road the triple crown and also joined in on the granfondo race. the incident that happend was at the finish line during the granfondo race. i was posted up with a long lens at in the press area trying to pick off our riders as they crossed the finish line, when BOOM, a cyclist crashed right in front of me, his bike slamming into my camera, which in turn slammed my camera and eye piece straight into my eye socket. the good old saying, “i never knew what hit me,” really fits here because of the fact i had a long lens on i never saw him coming because he was out of my field of view. after an ambulance ride, a few hours in the hospital, a TON of freaking out because until they got the swelling down i didn’t even know if i still had an eye and 9 stitches in my eye all is well, except for some nerve damage, but i can see! here’s a quick vid of what happened and some pictures of what it looked like, if you squeamish i would recommend not watching…

they wouldn’t let us film in the hospital so this is the only pic i have and it’s after the swelling had gone down and they cleaned it up a bit

and here it is with stitches and a few days later. they actually had to stitch my eyelid back together because it tore through it…

kaffee short

so i have been wanting to practice more with visual fx’s and also with green screening, so my buddy cory and i decided to shoot this little short the other day. basically set up a little noire scene with a green screen in the window so i could practice compositing that out first. i’m pretty happy with how the short turned out and thanks a ton to cory for acting and lighting, jimmy for giving me the music and some sound fx’s and to video copilot. here’s the flick:

fun with masks

i was a little bored in my office this morning, so i decided to have a little fun with masks in after effects. i’m trying to learn after effects better so i’m practicing these little things a lot. the colors are a bit off with some of the masks because i was using mostly natural lighting for the scene and it changed over the period i shot. also, a few of my masks are over lapping. i’m better than this, i promise. hahaha anywho, enjoy!

db clay…. the come back!

i have carried a db clay wallet for about 4 years now and let me tell you, i have never had a better one, or one that lasted me this long! well, garett stenson is now bringing db clay back from the ashes with a kick ass kickstarter campaign! with a ton of work from garett, mr. diggles on the web side, and myself and my friend brian on the video side, check out his huge kickstarter site to help raise some money to produce and release his new line of wallets Line 0.0. garett has amazing vision and i know that db clay is going to extremely successful, big shout out to all those that helped him get this campaign going! huge thanks to brian for helping me shoot this, that dude can frame things through the lens like no other!

Grass Valley video shoot Time Lapse

ever wonder what the setup and tear down of a video shoot looks like, i have, so i decided to do a time lapse of a couple of the setups we did and of course the tear down. the entire time lapse spans about 14 hours of work over a few days.
the shoot was with a local company here in portland or called picture this and was for grass valley, a very high end equipment producer for HD and slo-motion cameras and also very large switcher boards. basically any sporting event on television is shot using their cameras and switcher boards.

make sure to look for the killer fight sequence at the end of the video!

Tonkin Audi Wilsonville Grand Opening

recently my friend brian and i were asked to produce a video for the audi wilsonville grand opening. the night was a blast, full of amazing cars, great people, and even the president of audi usa was there. it was an amazing event and i am very grateful for the experience. thanks to scott of iamaudi.com and audi willsonville, for giving us the opportunity. the video turned out superb and hopefully everyone enjoys!

also a big shout out to my friend matt for letting me use his steady cam!

DIY Jib on music video shoot

hello world. quick post just to show some more footage shot with my diy jib. this was shot on set for a new music video for con bro chill. i met him through a great bunch of guys and we decided to form rainbreak, basically a bunch of guys getting together and doing stupid/creative stuff with video. hope you enjoy the video world, and major thanks to my bro brian for the amazing jib shots, first time at it and the dood rulez!

DIY 7D Jib

hello internets, how was your weekend? oh mine, well i finally got bored and decided to go out and make my own camera jib instead of spending the hundreds of thousands of dollars on one. how you might ask? well, i went to home depot, grabbed a shopping cart and walked around the store looking at hardware that i thought would work well on a jib. turns out that most the hardware you will need is in the fencing and bolt isles. so anywho, here’s a list of what i used:

2 8 foot square aluminum tubes
1 flat fencing mending plate (later bent into L shape for camera mount)
5 10 inch mending plates (found near the door hinges and such)
2 eye bolts to keep the sand bags on
a bunch of good old 1/4 inch nuts and bolts to keep the thing together

total cost ~ 75 bucks (way cheaper than anything you can get online)

viola! camera jib!

now i know it’s not the most sophisticated piece of equipment, but it works and i have plans in mind for a jib 2.0 to correct some of the mistakes that i have made on this one. but hey, it’s my first jib and since i have never used one or really seen one, besides pics on the nets and such, i figure its a pretty good first try.
